To convert files to portable, I use DVDFab & it works great as it has all the options for whichever portable media you may be using. I haven't needed to convert (or shrink) any files to do so.
I would be trying a few different software programs (grab trials first) and see what's best for you. There are plenty of cracked programs out there to choose from, just remember not to update any of them
Also, you could buy the program and cut out any installation and update issues
